Post-Modernism began in 1980. Architecture, design, fashion, and philosophy was effected by this new movement. Recycling and do it yourself projects became popular. Many aspects of this movement effected inparticular the work place. Because of the invetion of the personal computer the work envirment changed.

The Memphis Movement began in Italy. The movement went against the status quo and the typical shape. The Memphis Movement was known as being, "radical, funny, and outrageous." The movement typically used laminate and terrazzo. Throughout the Memphis designs, there is squiggles, bright, and multi-colored objects.

One Step Further

Richard Meir was born in New Jersey. He studied architecture at Cornell Univeristy. He was greatly influenced by Le Corbuier and Mies Vander Rohe. Though out is designs he uses a geometric design. His architecture merged the interior with the exterior. Almost all of his designs are white with an abstract form. According to Richard Meir he uses white because it enhances the light in the space.

Some of Richard Meirs major works was the High Museum in Atlanta, Meier on Rothschild, and On Prospect Park. Richard Meir focused on 10 factors and had to use at least one in ever design.

  1. Christyanne, I really found the Memphis Movement really interesting. It reminded me of Dorothy Draper but a modern approach and a further exploration with patterns, shapes and brighter colors.

  2. Christyanne- good summary - Richard Meier was a great choice to study further. Being a member of the New York 5- his influence during this period was substantial. The Getty Center being one of his most significant works!
